Where to cycle safely in Singapore

Below are the lists of parks and gardens in Singapore where there are bicycle lanes and away from the bustle of the city. You can drive to the locations and unload your bike for an afternoon of family fun. Except for Pulau Ubin, you would need to take a bum boat across to the nice rustic island. There are bikes for hire on the island - From S$8-12 for the day, or you can bring your bike up the bumboat for S$2.50/bike; the same charges for a person.

Personally if you are training for OCBC Singapore, or need to burn 2000 calories, you would prefer East Coast Park. There are Park Connector Networks connected to the ECP, and you can easily get a 50 km ride without much disturbance especially since MacDonald's at Marine Cove has shut it's doors in March earlier this year. Operating since 1982, a bulk of my fun memories cycling and rollerblading has been at this place.

Ride Bright

In addition to my earlier post on lights and safety, I've also had these pair of pedals since 2010.
I picked them up, strangely, in a shoe shop somewhere in London. Going for only £25, they were the last in the shop. I always thought, it would be good to have side lights when I cycle past T junctions or cross junctions where cars from the other side can see me.
Oh did I mentioned that these pedals are powered by kinetic energy and would not require any batteries, they light up when pedaling! They are also very durable and can withstand crashes.

Ride safe

Always ride safe, have your gear ready when you start your journey. I found these matching grey ZeroRH+ gloves in Paris last year in a bike shop along Champs Elysee. They were a steal and go so nicely with my grey trek. Considering ZeroRH makes the best sports gear around, many reviews have considered them one of the best gloves that money can buy. So obviously I dumped my Nike ones, which were starting to degenerate, and are almost twice as heavy as these. Known to be the best gloves for technical and performance wear, the fabric is very soft and dries quickly. The gloves are pre-formed to an anatomic construction, which basically means it is designed to fit to you hand, well, like a glove. You won't have to worry about breaking these gloves in, they will already be molded to your hands for fit and comfort.

Next must have accessory on your bike is the lights. Lights save lives.

One can never have too much lights.

Increasing visibility on the road, means increasing awareness to drivers on the road. Be it night or day riding, we must increase our presence on the road. So ride safe, keep your lights blinking and stay visible. Wear light colored clothes, especially at night. So above is my front reflector, my 2 back lights, as well as my front LED lights. But they do look ugly.

I've decided to pick up this beauty on a recent trip to Taiwan where there is a bike shop just next to my hotel in Hsinchu.
This looks so much meaner and would look nicer on my seat post.

So this is designed and manufactured in Taiwan - Skully. They are patent pending and check out their webpage for other cute design products. And are they bright enough to replace my 2 back rear lights?

These are ultra bright red LEDs.

This was taken in bright daylight and almost blinding when up close. Turn the Skully on even in daylight to increase visibility. It has 2 modes, fixed or blinking and you activate the modes by pressing down on the face of the skull, it is water resistant, good for raining rides.

Comprises of 2 x CR2032 batteries inserted at the back.

Yes the batteries are not as easily available as the AAA ones for my old rear lights, but ain't these looking much nicer? There is a price to pay for looking good!

My ride

This is my current ride which I had for a long time...the 2006 Trek 4500

Frame: Alpha SL Aluminium
Front Suspension:Rockshox Dart 2 w/preload, lockout, 80mm
Wheels:26 x 2.20" Bontrager Jones ACX
Brakes: Avid SD-3 w/alloy Levers
Shifters: Shimano Deore 9 Speed
Rear Derailleur: Shimano Deore

My bike is currently chained up and raring to go for a ride. I have been busy with work and the move to my new place;I have yet to cycle around my neighbourhood, where there seems to be a nice bicycle trail and many quiet roads.
I have another blog which I occasionally blog about my cycling adventures since 2008, but it has dwindled due to excessive basketball blogging instead. So I decided to start up this blog to encourage cycling and capturing the moments during my rides. So let's enjoy the ride...
